Estela Grau

Estela graduated with a double degree in Oceanography and Environmental Science and was immediately drawn to the Caribbean. After completing her Bachelor’s, she joined the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance (DCNA) as a trainee on Saba, focusing on harmonizing shark data and fisheries monitoring. It was here that Estela joined her first shark-tagging expedition, an experience that sparked a lifelong passion for these misunderstood marine apex predators.

Seeking a deeper expertise, she pursued an International Master of Science in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSea), specializing in marine megafauna. She later applied this knowledge on Sint Maarten, where she coordinated a shark nursery pilot project focused on shark research and habitat protection.

In 2024, Estela rejoined the DCNA team as a contractor. She now translates complex scientific data into accessible, action-oriented education through BioNews Kids and the Big Live Nature Quiz. A natural communicator, Estela also fosters regional collaboration by coordinating the Outreach and Research & Monitoring Working Groups.

Estela’s heart remains firmly in the Caribbean, where she continues to be inspired by the vibrant marine life and the dedicated people working to protect it. She is driven by the mission to bring the nature of the Dutch Caribbean into every classroom, sparking an interest in science and a love for nature in the youngest minds.
