Dutch Caribbean Bird Monitoring: Focus on Tropicbirds

Tropicbird Nesting on Saba

In a continued effort to build capacity and standardize approaches, DCNA recently completed it’s tropicbird monitoring course on Saba. The course included seven participants from St. Eustatius and Saba and was led by Dr. Adrian Delnevo. DCNA and Dr. Delnevo have produced a manual to monitor bird populations on the Dutch Caribbean islands, and are now focusing on protocols for key species such as the Tropicbird – a key indicator of ecosystem health, the Brown Pelican with the St. Maarten Nature Foundation, and Terns on Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao. Check out Saba Conservation Foundation’s article for a summary and wonderful photos of the course.
